An introduction of Atkins diet

Posted on September 14th, 2009 by Nayab Naseer in Atkins Diet

Atkins diet or the Atkins Nutritional Approach is a low-carbohydrate diet approach, created by Dr. Robert Atkins to solve his own overweight condition. On tasting success, Dr. Atkins spread this diet through a franchisee business model and this soon became a popular and successful weight control approach.

The Atkins approach attributes the major cause for obesity to intake of sugar, flour, and high-fructose corn syrups, all of which form an integral part of the eating habits in USA and other western countries. Atkins provides an alternative diet that includes dominance of whole and unprocessed foods, and vegetables that would restrict the consumption of carbohydrates. This reduced intake of carbohydrates would switch the body’s metabolism from burning glucose as fuel to burning stored body fat.

The Atkins approach goes beyond a one-time approach. It is a planned life-long program to fight obesity. The four phases of the Atkins diet program includes induction, ongoing weight loss, pre-maintenance and lifetime maintenance.
